iPhone 18 Pro Buying Guide for Indian Buyers: Who Needs It and Who Doesn’t

Every September the same question comes up at family dinners and office chats: “Should I upgrade my iPhone?” This year the question comes with a bigger price tag. Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on 9 September 2026, and it went on sale in India on 18 September. The base model now starts at ₹1,64,900, roughly ₹30,000 more than the iPhone 17 Pro cost at launch.

That is a lot of money. So instead of repeating the launch-day hype, this guide covers who should buy the iPhone 18 Pro, who shouldn’t, and what else is worth your money if your budget is smaller.

iPhone 18 Pro price in India

Here are the official launch prices:

StoragePrice in India
256GB₹1,64,900
512GB₹1,89,900
1TB₹2,39,900
2TB₹3,14,900

It comes in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy. The larger iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900.

What’s actually new in the iPhone 18 Pro?

From the outside it looks almost the same as last year’s model. Most of the changes are inside.

A20 Pro chip. This is built on a 2nm process, and Apple has paired it with a larger vapor chamber for better cooling. In practice that means the phone can stay fast for longer during heavy tasks like gaming, video editing or long 4K recording, without slowing down from heat.

Variable aperture main camera. The 48MP main camera can now adjust its aperture, a first for the iPhone. Reviewers say this gives you more control over depth of field and low-light shots. The phone has a triple 48MP rear setup (main, ultra-wide and telephoto), and the front camera is 18MP.

Better battery. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback. Fast charging reaches about 50% in around 15 minutes with a compatible adapter. One review noted that real-world battery gains over the 17 Pro are fairly small, so don’t expect a miracle.

Display. The 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED display is the same size as last year’s. Reviewers still rate it among the best on any phone, though one lab-based review felt it isn’t quite at the very top level.

Other changes. There is a smaller Dynamic Island, 12GB RAM, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. It runs iOS 27 with Apple’s updated AI features and Siri.

The overall verdict from most reviewers is that it is a refinement of an already excellent phone, not a reinvention.

Who should buy the iPhone 18 Pro?

1. People upgrading from an iPhone 14 Pro or older. If your current phone is three or four years old, the jump in speed, camera quality and battery life will be obvious. This is where the upgrade makes the most sense.

2. Content creators and photographers. The camera controls and the 48MP triple-lens system are the main selling point. If you shoot videos, reels or product photos for work, the extra control is useful.

3. Heavy mobile gamers and power users. The better cooling matters if you play demanding games or edit video on your phone.

4. People who keep phones for 5+ years. Apple supports iPhones with software updates for a long time. Spreading ₹1.65 lakh over five or six years of use works out much better than it first looks.

5. Professionals who need the Apple ecosystem. If you already use a MacBook, iPad, AirPods or Apple Watch, the iPhone fits in smoothly.

Who should skip it?

  • iPhone 17 Pro owners. The gap is small, and reviewers describe the 18 Pro as an incremental upgrade. Your money is better saved.
  • Anyone stretching their budget or taking a high-interest loan. A phone should not become a financial burden. No-cost EMI is fine, but only if you can comfortably afford the monthly payment.
  • People who mostly use WhatsApp, YouTube, UPI and Instagram. A much cheaper phone does all of this just as well.
  • Anyone who wants a big screen. At 6.3 inches, the iPhone 18 Pro is on the compact side. The Pro Max is the larger option.

Essential things to check before buying

Storage. 256GB is enough for most people. Go for 512GB if you shoot a lot of 4K video. The 1TB and 2TB versions are very expensive and rarely necessary.

Warranty and seller. Buy only from Apple-authorised sellers. On Amazon, check that the listing says “Sold by” an authorised retailer or Amazon itself, and look for GST invoice availability.

Bank offers and exchange value. Compare your exchange value on different platforms. A good exchange deal can save you ₹10,000 or more.

Charger. Apple doesn’t include a power adapter in the box. To get the fast charging speeds mentioned above you need a compatible one, so factor that into your budget.

Case and screen guard. A good case is cheap insurance on a phone this expensive.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

  • Compare the price across Amazon, Flipkart, Croma and Apple’s own store.
  • Read a few independent reviews, not just the first Google result.
  • Pick the storage you will actually need in three years.
  • Keep your bill and the box in good condition for warranty claims and resale.
  • Budget for AppleCare+ if you tend to drop your phones.

Don’t:

  • Buy from random sellers offering “too good to be true” prices. Fake or grey-market imports are a real risk.
  • Buy the highest storage tier just because it looks premium.
  • Pay full price in the first week if you can wait for a festive sale.
  • Forget the extras (charger, case, screen guard) that add to the total.
  • Upgrade just because everyone else is.

What if the iPhone 18 Pro is too expensive? Alternatives at every budget

Not everyone needs a ₹1.65 lakh phone, and there is no shame in that. Here are some options I would shortlist, based on what reviewers and Indian retail listings say. Prices change quickly, so check each one live.

Cheaper iPhone options

iPhone 17. This is the sensible Apple pick if you want an iPhone without the Pro price. Apple raised its price in India after the 18 Pro launch, to ₹99,900 for the 256GB model. That is still around ₹65,000 less than the 18 Pro. Reviewers still call it a very capable phone.

Flagship Android alternatives

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Often named the best flagship Android phone for most people, with an excellent camera and a big display.

OnePlus 15. A strong choice if gaming performance matters more to you than camera brand names.

Mid-range picks (roughly ₹30,000 to ₹50,000)

iQOO 15R. Reviewers rate it highly for balanced performance, battery life and display at a mid-range price.

Google Pixel 10a. A good pick if you care about camera quality and clean Android with regular updates.

Budget picks (under ₹30,000)

Redmi Note 15 series. One of India’s most popular budget lines, offering AMOLED screens and solid battery life at low prices.

For anything under ₹30,000, the main things to check are a 120Hz AMOLED display, at least 5,000mAh battery, and how long the brand promises software updates.

Quick buying guide: which phone matches you?

  • Budget under ₹30,000: A Redmi Note 15 series phone covers all the basics.
  • ₹30,000 to ₹50,000: The iQOO 15R or Pixel 10a.
  • ₹90,000 to ₹1,00,000: The iPhone 17 or a Samsung flagship.
  • ₹1,65,000 and up, and you want the best camera and longest support: The iPhone 18 Pro.

Final verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro is an excellent phone. It has a fast chip, a flexible camera system and strong battery life, and it will serve you for years. But at ₹1,64,900 it is a luxury, not a necessity. Buy it if you are coming from an older iPhone, if you care about photography or video, or if you plan to keep it for a long time. Skip it if you already own the 17 Pro or if the price makes you uncomfortable.

If you’re still undecided, look at the iPhone 17 or one of the alternatives above. They will cover what most people actually do with a phone.
